All lectures will require free tickets.

All lectures are held in the Rhinehart Music Center

Tickets must be picked up in person at the Marilyn and Jim Larson Ticket Office in the Gates Athletics Center between 12:30 and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Tickets will be available three weeks prior to each lecture.

Tickets can also be obtained in person at the Schatzlein Box Office in the lobby of the Rhinehart Music Center, one hour before each lecture, if available.

Long-time historian and analyst of education, Diane Ravitch was an early proponent of accountability.  She now believes it actually undermines American education. She is Research Professor of Education at New York University and nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Ravitch co-writes the blog Bridging Differences and also blogs for Politico.com and the Huffington Post. Ravitch was Assistant Secretary of Education and Counselor to Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander, in the George H.W. Bush administration. She was responsible for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement in the U.S. Department of Education. As Assistant Secretary, Ravitch led the federal effort to promote the creation of voluntary state and national academic standards. From 1997­–2004, she was a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, appointed by, Richard Riley, Secretary of Education under President Clinton. From 1995–2005, she held the Brown Chair in Education Studies at the Brookings Institution and edited Brookings Papers on Education Policy.

Ravitch has authored many books, including The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education (2010), Edspeak: A Glossary of Education Terms, Phrases, Buzzwords, and Jargon (2007), and The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn (2003).  She has written more than 500 articles and reviews for scholarly and popular publications and has lectured extensively in the U.S. and abroad.

The National Education Association selected Ravitch as its "Friend of Education" for 2010, and she was honored with the Outstanding Friend of Education Award from the Horace Mann League in 2011.  Her numerous honors include Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, the Henry Allen Moe prize in the humanities, Wellesley College Alumnae Achievement Award, the American Education Award from the American Association of School Administrators, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals' Distinguished Service Award.
